Hello from Growing Well Garden!

Susan has worked as a GP in the NHS for over twenty years. She is also a keen gardener and describes her garden as her happy place although doesn’t know the Latin names for practically any plants and is a firm believer in the saying “There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments”! In early 2022 she got the opportunity to fulfil a long held ambition of setting up a social prescribing / community garden at the surgery where she works. She holds a Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine and is passionate about the power of green space, horticulture and nature to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of her patients.

Emma is a hugely experienced NHS midwife who has also worked on projects internationally for MSF. She continues to work in midwifery alongside her role in the garden as a Green Social Prescriber. She has always tried growing something wherever she has lived -even in the deserts of Africa and is fascinated by the power of plants in terms of folklore, healing and history. Her passion has always been in good mental health being fundamental to physical wellbeing. Emma is currently working towards RHS Level 2 horticultural qualifications at Bicton College.

Louise is our Lead Garden Volunteer. She has always loved nature and the outdoors from childhood but her love of gardening began when she took over an overgrown garden and a small dilapidated greenhouse. She was inspired by Geoff Hamilton, then the presented of BBC’s Gardener’s World, and her father-in-law who was himself a professional gardener. A turning point for Louise came five years ago following a cancer diagnosis. She focused all her time and effort into gardening and growing and joined a local community allotment where she was introduced to social prescribing and the therapeutic benefits of gardening. It was during this time that she discovered a connection to others through the joy of gardening as well as sharing well-being, healing and social benefits. Louise holds the RHS Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture.
